Narrative
I never did any real research on my Mom and Dad, but will relay some of the stories that they and Grandma Rose Yaeger used to tell me. On Dad's side, Grandpa Oscar Yaeger came to this country from eastern Europe when he was seven years old (about 1890). Grandma was 17 when she and Grandpa married. Grandpa's mother, Marie was still alive when I was a little girl; she lived in a big house on Third Street in Louisville. Great-Grandpa and Grandma always wanted my Dad to become a minister (they always said that they had come to this country for religious freedom). Grandma Rose was born on Stinking Creek in eastern Kentucky and later went west in a covered wagon to Iowa and later to Oklahoma. When she was seven years old, her father, Ballenger, left the family stranded (a newborn sister had just died) and came back to Kentucky. Her mother,China Miller, packed up all seven kids and came back to Kentucky by train and settled in Louisville. Grandma had a very hard life and went to work in a cigar factory when she was nine years old. Rose and Oscar build a house on Kahlert Avenue in Louisville and raised their eight children there (3656 Kahlert Avenue). Grandpa was a carpenter for the L and N trains. Several years ago, I made a photo album that has some pictures of some of the places in our neighborhood where we lived at 811 Brentwood Street in Louisville. ~Granddaughter of Rose Ann Miller
