The 'State of Kentucky' was one year old when William Coy, Jr was born in July 1793. The son of a pioneer and a Revolutionary War soldier, he was raised 10 to 15 miles south of Boonsboro on the Boone's Trace, just north of Paint Lick, in Garrard County. At that time legal ownership of land was not needed, the areas were defined by mutual agreement, there is no record of his father owning ground or slaves. Slavery was practiced in the state, and no more than ten to fifteen miles east of their home in Garrard Co.

William Coy b 3-10-56 Montgomery Co., MD. Enlisted 7-1777 Montgomery Co., MD, commanded by Capt. Nathaniel Pigman, Col. Moredock's Reg., Gen Smallwood's Brigade MD. Served 5 months in the battle of Germantown; Disc. 10-4-1781. Drafter 10/1781, served 5 months guard over Cornwassis' men, Hessians at Fredericktown. Wm Coy died 7-10-1833. Buried on Ted Carver farm, Hominy Ridge near Delphi school, Sect. 21 R 1 W York Township.

From "Kentucky's Historic Farms - 200 Years of Kentucky Agriculture" Christopher Coy and his brother, David William Coy, both immigrated to Madison County, Kentucky, from Maryland after serving in the Revolutionary War. Samuel Coy sold Tandy Farm A to Pascal Broaddus in 1828 and Tandy farm B to Thomas Broaddus, Pascal's older brother, in 1827 and moved to Howard County, Missouri. Samuel's son, Tandy Coy, subsequently returned ("came up Cincinnati Branch, a small branch of Paint Lick Creek, in an ox cart with everything I owned") and purchased Tandy Farm A and B in 1840 from his Broaddus cousins.
